Feelings About Telecommuting During the Health Crisis: A Semantic Network Analysis
Abstract
Remote work during COVID-19 has caused an intense imbalance in the dynamics between work demands and resources. The study analyzed feelings evoked by 5637 public servants working remotely at the onset of the health crisis, who responded to a question about the feelings experienced during this period. A semantic network filtered by Incidence-Fidelity index was generated to detect relevant associations. Six communities were identified: teleworking as an activity during the pandemic; well-being and work at home; overload and work-home balance; relationship with colleagues; ergonomic challenges and advantages of teleworking. Despite the appreciation of flexible schedules and learning opportunities, the experience was predominantly marked by feelings of stress and anxiety. Challenges related to ergonomics and infrastructure contrasted with reports of high productivity. The advantages of this modality for organizations and workers depend on ensuring work and personal resources capable of minimizing and controlling the negative impacts of demands.
