Artificial Intelligence, Desire, and Erasure: A Psychoanalytic Perspective

Authors

Abstract

In this article, it is discussed the ethical issues in the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on the relationship between subject and machine. Using a psychoanalytic perspective, the analysis addresses the erasure of the subject in the context of AI, considering unconscious desire and Lacan’s discourses. It highlights how AI perpetuates social and economic inequalities, exacerbating the exploitation of workers in lithium mining and data labeling. AI captures the user’s desire, promising to satisfy their needs, but always maintaining an inherent lack, according to Lacanian theory. Additionally, the article explores ethics in AI algorithms, including privacy, bias, and responsibility issues. It suggests that AI promotes the erasure of the subject, both in development and as a desiring consumer. The article argues that the construction of ethical AIs must consider the subjective and social implications of users, proposing psychoanalysis as a crucial tool.
