Mental Health and Indigenous People: A Global Scoping Review

Authors

Abstract

The objective of this article was to analyze publications on mental health and indigenous peoples in different sociocultural contexts over the last 10 years in order to understand whether these studies considered traditional indigenous knowledge and practices in defining the mental health of these populations. A scoping review was conducted in the Scopus, DOAJ, and SciELO databases, as well as in the BVS Povos Indígenas virtual repository. Twelve articles were considered relevant. These were analyzed in three thematic categories: historical impact of colonization; criticism of the reproduction of biomedical concepts of mental health; dialogues committed to indigenous knowledge. The discussions made can guide the development of ethical and committed research that contributes to the affirmation of diversity in ways of life, care, and health. In conclusion, some lessons that the analyzed articles offer are highlighted to help non-indigenous researchers in the field of indigenous mental health.
