New Life Projects After Suicide Attempt. A Qualitative Study

Authors

Abstract

Background: Suicide is the leading external cause of death in Spain, with many attempts remaining hidden and requiring further study. As a previous suicide attempt is a major risk factor, understanding recovery processes and their outcomes is essential. Objective: To identify individual needs after a suicide attempt to support the development of new life projects during recovery. Method: A qualitative study was conducted through ad hoc designed in-depth interviews with 17 participants. Data were analysed using Atlas.ti 9 software. Results: Seven categories emerged, grouped into three macro-categories: Recovery process (personal rebuilding, therapy and support as solutions, healthy and stable social networks); Individual needs (barriers to recovery and the need for non-judgmental expression); and New life projects (everyday projects and balancing uncertainty with a new life). Conclusions: Addressing individual needs following a suicide attempt and fostering new life projects are key to improving interventions and promoting long-term wellbeing.
