A Reliability Generalization Meta-analysis of the Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS)
Abstract
The Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS) is a widely used instrument for assessing compulsive buying as an addictive behavior. This study aimed to examine the reliability of the 7-item version of the BSAS and explore potential moderating variables. A meta-analysis was conducted, including 15 studies with 17 independent samples. The average Cronbach’s alpha was .88 (95% CI [.86 to .90]), with high heterogeneity (I² = 97.99%). The variables contributing most to this heterogeneity were the mean age of the sample (R² = .50) and the standard deviation of age (R² = .36). Overall, the findings indicate that the BSAS is a reliable and consistent measure for assessing compulsive buying. These results highlight the importance of reporting reliability estimates in empirical research and provide a foundation for future studies on the 28-item version and its psychometric properties.
