Management impression and nonverbal behavior in job interviews
Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze, from the perspective of the selectors, the impression management strategies and nonverbal behaviors used by candidates during the job interview. Fourteen job interviews were video recorded, and the images were analized using thematic content and visual data analysis techniques. The strategy of self-promotion was the most perceived by the interviewers, in which the candidates emphasize their positive outcomes, skills and competencies. Nonverbal behaviors kinesthetic and accent were perceived as associated with the use of self-promotion strategy. The implications of using these management and nonverbal behavior strategies in recruitment decision making processes are discussed.
